In India, people moving between the horizons or the verticles for education or business mostly communicate in English. This is no doubt considered as the main business link language. Especially if we move towards South India, people commuting from North India will face a difficult time communicating in other vernaculars like Hindi. Therefore, English is the only language that is spoken after the state-vernaculars like Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telegu. Keeping all these things in mind, the Parliament has also recognized and implemented 'English' as an official language in addition to Hindi nationwide when it comes to Centrally Controlled offices.
All the education boards and councils understood the importance of learning English in addition to vernaculars and considered English as a mandatory language in primary classes which was optional in some educational boards and councils a few years earlier. Observing the huge demand for admission in English medium schools throughout the country is a live testimony to the attraction and necessity of English for the people of India. Many political leaders, who once denounced English to be considered as a mandatory language and advocated to keep it an optional language, send their children to English medium schools for their better future. What an irony!
A language will attract people because of its wealth and knowledge enshrined in it. It should be simple to understand, easy to speak, soothing to hear, should be logical as well and can maintain the charm to attract people towards it. The English language has all these wealth and knowledge enshrined in it creating a ‘Royal impression’.
India is a democratic country with diversified culture, values and its languages are vibrant wherein every five (5) kilometres the language, accent, dialects, intonations and expression changes. The only thing that can bind the entire nation is a sole language. Many will agree that we have the Hindi language as our National language but we all know that in many states in India, the Hindi language isn’t widely spoken or written. On the contrary, it has been observed that the English language is more widely spoken than the Hindi language. The main reason found was the utility of the language. Hindi is no doubt a very beautiful language but the English language is the most widely spoken globally.
